Cyclical Training: How to  Beat the Winter Energy Lull

As the days get shorter and the air has a crisp & wintery nip to it, many of us are beginning to find it tougher to get an intense workout in.

For some of us, that lack of energy frustrates us. Rather than flow with the seasons and embrace the stillness of winter, some of us guilt ourselves into thinking we *have* to workout the same way, with the same intensity, all year long; but, did you know that even sports science backs cyclical training?

Periodization, or cyclical long-term structuring of sport and athletic programming, is utilized by top professional teams and wellness coaches throughout the year in order to mitigate injury, improve performance, and even to yield the greatest strength and fitness improvements.

Football players may take up ballet, some soccer players spend their offseason doing yoga and Barre, and some Olympic weightlifters focus on aerobic stamina. Maybe your winter go-to is taking a hike or walk [with some warm tea at the end] or dancing while you clean the kitchen.

If you're feeling a lull in energy, and your intuition is guiding you to change up your typical exercise regimen, take a chance at periodizing your training and switching up your workouts for a bit.

It may be just the change you need to reach your fitness (and overall wellness) goals.
