The 3 F’s of Fitness New Year Resolutions

Each year, as the New Year approaches, fitness companies bombard your advertisements with campaigns meant to target your fears and body image insecurities. In 2021, if we are to make any resolutions surrounding fitness, try to see if they meet the following criteria:

  1. Function: Is it related to your functional limitations or capabilities? Examples: “I aim to do my shoulder physical therapy exercises 3x/week so that I can pick up my kids without pain” or “I aim to practice my parasympathetic breathing exercises for 5 minutes before bed to decrease my anxiety and improve my sleep.”

  2. Fluid: Does it allow for fluidity— or is it so rigid it’s difficult to maintain in the real flow of life. If 2020 taught us anything, we can’t control the circumstances of our lives; only our ability to flow within the circumstances.

  3. Freeing: Does it make you feel free, like it’s feeding your soul? Or, does it restrict you? When we set resolutions that entrap us in something that we think we have to do (because of some outward expectation), we are less likely to follow through. Even more, do we really want to add things into our lives that “empty our cup? Isn’t the whole point of a resolution to clear out space for the addition of something positive into our lives?

So, as you ring in 2021, if you do decide to make resolutions, make sure they meet the three most important F’s in Fitness goals.

And, while you’re at it, go ahead and mute any of those ads that make you feel anything less than vibrant.
